Social Media Safety: Involves taking precautions on social media for protection of privacy, personal information, and online well-being. Because social media can publicly expose significant amounts of information, it is important to implement safety measures to reduce privacy concerns and information exposure.

Social Media Security: Focuses on safeguarding accounts, information, and privacy from cyber threats. It is crucial due to the constant emergence of risks in the digital landscape. Implementing security measures on social media accounts is important for information protection and maintaining professional integrity.

Risks on Social Media

Privacy Risks: Privacy is a great concern on social media. Threat actors will often perform malicious reconnaissance to gather information on a person or organization. Posting too much information allows for identity theft or leveraging this information in cyber-attacks.

Cyber Risks: Social media allows threat actors to leverage attacks. Malware can be present on social media, so it is crucial to remain alert for potential phishing attempts and malicious links lingering on social media.

Top Recommendations

Implement Privacy Settings: Use privacy settings to limit who can view your content. Regularly check and update these settings to ensure only people you know can see your posts.

Implement Account Security Measures: Use strong passwords (12+ characters) with a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Consider Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for added security.

Be Mindful of Potential Oversharing: Avoid oversharing personal information. Refrain from posting details like names, addresses, and phone numbers publicly. Consider the safety implications of sharing personal or location-related content.

Report Harassment and Inappropriate Content: If you feel uncomfortable due to someone’s behavior online, report them. Flag inappropriate content, and if you encounter harassment, save evidence for reporting.
