Summary

Atlassian has released four security advisories and patches fixing remote code execution flaws in several Atlassian products. The CVEs mentioned are CVE-2022-1471, CVE-2023-22523, CVE-2023-22524, and CVE-2023-22522 each having a CVSS 3.1 score ranging from 9.0 – 9.8 according to Atlassian and the National Vulnerability Database.

Impact Assessment

The products affected by the four vulnerabilities are as follows:

CVE-2022-1471

  1. Automation for Jira (A4J) app (including Server Lite edition)
  2. Bitbucket Data Center and Server
  3. Confluence Data Center and Server
  4. Confluence Cloud Migration App (CCMA)
  5. Jira Core Data Center and Server
  6. Jira Service Management Data Center and Server
  7. Jira Software Data Center and Server

CVE-2023-22523

Assets Discovery for . . .

  1. Jira Service Management Cloud
  2. Jira Service Management Server
  3. Jira Service Management Data Center

CVE-2023-22524

Atlassian Companion App for MacOS for Confluence Data Center and Server

CVE-2023-22522

Confluence Data Center and Server

These vulnerabilities are highly critical because they allow code to be executed remotely. Patching or implementing workarounds should be made a top priority.

What it means for you

Reviewing your organization’s software and cloud app inventory for instances or installations of any of these affected products is paramount. Patches will need to be applied to several systems if Atlassian products are used.

Remediation

CVE-2023-22522 – Patch to a fixed version. Atlassian Cloud sites are not affected, if your Confluence site is accessed via an Atlassian.net domain, it is hosted by Atlassian and is not vulnerable. If unable to patch immediately, Atlassian recommends that you back up your instance now, and remove your instance from the internet until you can patch.

CVE-2023-22524 – Patch to a fixed version. If unable to patch, uninstalling the Atlassian Companion App will mitigate the vulnerability.

CVE-2023-22523 – Patch to a fixed version of Assets Discovery application and agents. It is necessary to uninstall all Assets Discovery agents, apply the Assets Discovery application patch, and reinstall all Assets Discovery Agents. Uninstalling the agents will mitigate the risk. A temporary mitigation if uninstalling the agents is not possible at that time is to block the port used for communication with the agents (port 51337). There is more information on details of ensuring this is fixed and mitigated at their FAQ.

CVE-2022-1471 – Patch to a fixed version and/or apply mitigations.

The fix is contained in 7.13.18,   7.19.10, and 8.3.1, however these versions also contain previously communicated security vulnerabilities.

Business Implications

There are many repercussions which could result from a Remote Code Execution being successfully leveraged against an organization. Financial losses, data breaches, privacy violations, reputational damage, legal/compliance issues, as well as operational disruption are a few consequences which could possibly occur if any one of these vulnerabilities are exploited.

Access Point Technology Recommends

Patch and/or mitigate: Follow vendor instructions to patch the affected software to a fixed version or apply vendor mitigations if not possible.

Disaster Recovery Plan: It is important to have a plan in place in order to perform a swift recovery if exploitation is successful. This will mitigate damage by minimizing downtime and financial losses.

Defense in Depth: Having multiple layers of defense, read only files, network segmentation, as well as trained and knowledgeable staff will be a great asset in preventing vulnerabilities from being exploited and mitigating the impact when they are.
