Summary
A vulnerability classified as CVE-2024-39717 (CVSSv3.0:6.6) was recently disclosed on August 22, 2024 that allowed potentially malicious files to be uploaded by users with Data Center System Admin or Data Center System Admin credentials in the Versa Director GUI. The Favorite Icon option can be misused to upload a malicious file with a .png extension masquerading as an image file. There is evidence of this vulnerability being exploited by a threat actor and it has been added to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog.
Impact
The affected platform is Versa Director and the vulnerability affects customers who have not implemented Versa’s recommended system hardening and firewall guidelines. If exploited, a user with a privileged role is able to upload a file to potentially perform arbitrary code execution. This is considered an unrestricted upload of file with dangerous type.
Remediation
Updating to the version associated with the Matrix above will allow remediation of this vulnerability.
It is also advised by the vendor to follow the hardening and firewall configuration guidelines. If these guidelines are followed, your instance of Versa Director will not be considered vulnerable.
Recommendations
Patch: Apply the patch associated with your organization’s Versa Director version noted in the Remediation section above.
Follow vendor guidelines: The Vendor provides best practices for hardening and firewall configurations that prevent this vulnerability from being exploited. Review your current configuration to see if these recommendations are in place and consider adopting them, if not. Note: You must have a Versa account to view these articles.
Check for compromise: Since there is evidence of exploitation, there are ways to check if this vulnerability has been leveraged against your organization. The vendor has advised to inspect the “/var/versa/vnms/web/custom_logo/” folder for any suspicious files that have been uploaded. It is advised to run the command “file -b -mime-type <.png file>” to check if it returns as the “image/png” filetype. If it does not incident response should occur immediately as there is a high likelihood that this vulnerability has been exploited.
